Myth Retold

Hello, I am Chang'e, and this is my story. My myth is a rather short one with a bitter ending. First off, I would like to introduce you to my husband, Yi. I love him very much. He loves me to such an extent, that he never wants us to die, but always be together. There is only one thing that can do this for us, though. It is a special elixir of immortality that comes from Xi Wang Mu, the Queen of the West.

Yi sets out in search of the elixir. It takes him a long time, but he is determined and eventually comes home with it in his possession. He tells me that Xi Wang Mu told him to split the elixir equally between us, and we will both live happily for eternity. As I might have mentioned, I am not very comfortable with my physical shape. I had heard from a few people, that with enough of this elixir, your body slims down and you look amazing. So I thought why not? It can't hurt, right?

Wrong. I could not have been more wrong. Before I knew it, I started to get dizzy, and eventually fell asleep. When I woke up, I was quite confused, because my surroundings looked completely different. I was on the moon. And I looked completely different, too. I was a toad. And ugly, shedding, striped toad. So this was my punishment. Stuck on the moon in the form of the most ugly creature possible. And Yi wasn't with me, either. I was all alone.

But I wasn't really alone. In the distance, there was the shadows of two other creatures. Once I reached them, I saw that one was a white hare, and the other was a man, who I later learned was named Wu Kang. The hare was on the moon for no apparent reason. He spent his time annoying Wu Kang, and eventually me, and trying to make an elixir of immortality himself. Wu Kang was on the moon as punishment. He was condemned to chop down a great, red, cassia tree. This task, which might seem easy, is actually impossible, because the cassia tree is in fact, itself, immortal. Whenever its trunk gets cut from Wu Kang's axe, it only repairs itself.

Time goes by, and I am still stuck on the moon, alone, ugly, and bored. Wu Kang continues to tire himself trying to achieve something that simply cannot be done. The white hare, who may or may not be the Jade Rabbit just keeps on making concoctions that all fail to be an elixir of immortality. This is the end. Other than a jade palace, one that has no purpose, appearing, nothing changes. The three of us remain on the moon for eternity.

Myth Resolution

Wu Kang and I's story does not have a happy resolution. Wu Kang never returns to Earth because he fails to chop down the cassia tree. I never leave the moon and turn back into a human because the Jade Emperor does not see it fit because of my stealing. Our myth is not so much of an eventful or long myth. It is like a short story that ends up with both of us forever stuck on the moon as a toad/chopping down a cassia tree.

Myth Climax

I steal the elixir from my husband and get sent to the moon. The climax is when I meet Wu Kang and am turned into a toad. The Gods have given this punishment to me because they look down upon thieves. I am not any ordinary toad, either. I am an extremely ugly, striped toad who sheds its skin. Wu Kang and I meet and I find out he is banished to the moon as well. This is the climax of my myth because it is when I meet my companion and am metamorphosed into a completely different creature.

Myth Conflict

Just like any other myth, my myth has a conflict. The conflict is partially mine, and partially Wu Kang's. In this particular myth, like I said, I am a toad living on the moon because I stole the elixir of immortality. This counts as conflict because I do not want to be a toad, and also want to get off the moon. The other part of the conflict has to do with Wu Kang. He is on the moon because of errors he made against the unseen world of the spirits. He does not change into a toad, but he is made to cut down the cassia tree on the moon as punishment. This is an impossible task because the cassia tree has the power to grow forever, in other words, all cuts made toward it immediately heal. So Wu Kang and I both are stuck on the moon, me in the form of a toad and him with an assignment that cannot be done. These conflicts might not seem that horrible, but they truly are to us. We get lonely and just want to go back before we were punished.

Myth Characters

First there is me. I am in the form of a toad. A striped toad who sheds my skin at that. As a toad, I am very unhappy, because I want to be turned back into my usual self: a human. In addition to me, there is the hare. The hare is white, and is always trying to make elixirs. He is very annoying and hyper, but has delicate feelings. My husband, Yi, got the elixir of immortality from the Queen of the West. Yi is brave and kind. The Queen is very generous and smart. I was banished to the moon because of the Gods of Heaven for stealing the elixir from my husband. Lastly, while I'm on the moon, there is another man who is there for punishment, as well. His name is Wu Kang. Wu Kang has lots of perseverance that keeps him from quitting trying to cut down the cassia tree. He is an alchemist who wants the elixir of immortality, too.

Myth Setting

In this particular myth, I am not alone. Nor am I the goddess of the moon, but I am still on the moon. But anyway, I'll get to that later. Now I want to talk about red. Beautiful, bright, brilliant red. The red that only a cassia tree can possess, or cinnabar, an extraordinary stone. In addition to this tree, that will heal itself and never stop growing, there are mythical creatures. A striped toad that sheds his skin and a small hare are among the main creatures. A mortar and pestle for making the elixir, and Wu Kang's axe are on the moon, too. Lastly, a beautiful jade tree and jade palace are said to appear on the moon as well.
